One HUGE waste of picnics and barbecues is the waste after from the paper or plastic plates, the plastic utensils, etc. First, I hope you are at least using paper plates and not those plastic ones. Depending on the type of plastic and the situation in which it is disposed of, it could take thousands of years for 1 plastic fork to biodegrade. That doesn't sound very good. Let's not talk about plastic cups! Oh my! Instead, have an Eco-friendly picnic or BBQ, here are some suggestions:
Reusable plates, cups, and utensils. Taking dirty things home to wash them might take more time, but it is less wasteful and better for the environment than throwing things away. Especially if they take several if not thousands of years to actually "go away". I recently heard a good suggestion to go to the Good Will or Deseret Industries and pick up some inexpensive and decent kitchenware that you can use just for picnics and BBQs. When you aren't using it you can store it in your basement or garage so it doens't take up space. This way you don't have to worry about them broken plates... you only paid $0.50! You don't have to worry about matching, because its a picnic and anything looks better than that bright red plastic cup that can probably be seen from space anyway! Those things are Tacky Tacky!
Remember all that Tupperware and Pyrex you purchased? Get some good use out of it by taking it along -- you might have leftover food that you can take back home after your picnic. Waste not, want not.
Paper napkins are convenient, but cloth napkins are nicer to the touch, and you will be conserving! Think of how classy your friends will think you are when your next BBQ has cloth napkins! They will be awe struck by your clever and Eco-friendly ways.
There are some biodegradable plastics. If you absolutely cannot use reusable table ware, then try out the biodegradable plates, cups, and utensils like World Centric Biocompostables. But remember, unless you compost them, they're really no better than disposable plates getting tossed in the trash. Its a little more expensive, but I think well worth it.
Please think of Mother Nature and this wonderful, not replaceable, Earth that we live on next time you are preparing for your summer picnic or celebration.
Sat Nam!
