Watch out for that first step
The legend of Groundhog Day is based on an old Scottish couplet: "If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year."
Naturally, every year on February 2 it seems only right to get excited to watch the movie Groundhog Day. I can't believe that Groundhog Day came out in 1993. Wow how time flies!
I have a hard time embracing 2007. With a new year there is always the excitement of looking forward to new things, setting new goals, and meeting new challenges. I do things a little differently and try to make my resolutions on my birthday - it usually helps me deal with the fact that I'm getting older every year and my birthday, personally, is a good time for personal reflection and growth. Well, usually. I just feel that time is slipping by so quickly and though it was only recently that we were ringing in 2000- the new millennium - and now it is 2007. Just a little hard to embrace.
During this reflection I am reminded of my favorite line from the movie. "Watch out for that first step, its a dooooozy!" As January comes to an end and we look forward at the new year and the end of winter (depending on the shadow of a groundhog) remember this line that I have quoted. Sometimes that first step IS a doozy. Sometimes January is a big BLAH and it needs to be put in the lurch of our minds quickly in order for the rest of the year to be successful. I'm looking forward to February. There is much to look forward to and much to learn from. I am going to focus on my resolutions and my personal goals. I think that will help me take that "second step" into the rest of the year.
Happy Groundhog Day! Good luck Mr. Punxsutawney Phil!

Recognizing February as a new beginning is a great idea. I kind of like to recognize Tuesday as the first day of the new week. Monday is spent talking about the weekend, but Tuesday is when you're actually going through the motions!
p.s. Doesn't Groundhog's day seem so trivial now that we are in LA and AZ? If we were still in SLC we would be holding hands with crossed fingers for the cloud of winter to pass quickly!
