SugaCane Lounge, downtown Los Angeles

While on a girl's night out, before our main event at the LA Opera, a girlfriend and I stopped by SugaCane to eat dinner.  (One of the owners of this lovely, family- owned restaurant is a friend of the girlfriend I was with.)

The fare at SugaCane is Jamaican/Caribbean.  We started with Callalou patties which were spinach and vegetable filled pockets, much like an empanada.  It was so very delicious and full of flavor that I could have eaten them all night!  The spices inside were great and flavorful, and the crust on the outside was flaky and crisp.  I had a difficult time deciding  which entree to order.  There was a Jerk Tofu available, which my friend ordered, and I ordered the Spicy Beans and Vegetables.  I tasted my friend's dish as well as devouring my own.  The food was fast, and so delicious,  I wanted to stay and savor it all night.  The flavor and the aroma of the food was so great!  I am very particular about my vegetables and how they are cooked.  These vegetables had great flavor, and well cooked, not overdone or mushy.  I enjoyed the fried plantains and even the rice.  I can't wait to try the cornbread next time I go.  The service was very friendly, and the atmosphere was nice, quaint and clean.  I really enjoyed the experience of eating at SugaCane and I will definitely go back.

SugaCane Lounge is located at 1053 South Hill St. in downtown Los Angeles.  http://angelenic.com/uploads/sugacane_menu_sample.pdf
